UPMC Cytogenetics Laboratory
The Pittsburgh Cytogenetics Laboratory (PCL) is a
part of the MWH Clinical Genetics and Genomics Laboratory.
It is located at Magee-Women's Hopsital (MWH) of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). It is
accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and is licensed by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement
Amendments (CLIA) and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Health. It is a Children’s Oncology Group
(COG) approved full-service facility. The PCL is staffed by American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
(ABMGG) certified MD and PhD faculties and highly skilled cytogenetic technologists who are certified by the
American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR) as specialists in cytogenetics and
molecular biology. It is also accredited by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics for clinical
cytogenetics fellowship training.
The PCL offers conventional cytogenetic testing and “state-of-the-art” cytogenetic testing to health care providers in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. The comprehensive testing services include:
- high quality chromosomal analyses on amniotic fluid, chorionic villus samples (CVS), peripheral blood, cord blood, bone marrow, lymph node, skin biopsy, malignant tumors and products of conception
- molecular cytogenetic analyses by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) on oncology and constitutional samples
